Canadian Women of Courage!

Canadian Women of Courage looks at women who served overseas during World War Two. The four episodes tell the stories of: the Canadian Nursing Sisters; Gladys Arnold, the only member of the Canadian press to witness the fall of France; the girls who served in the Canadian Army Show; and Joan Bamford Fletcher, who commanded 80 Japanese soldiers to free a Dutch internment camp in Sumatra.

Getting the "Flapper" Look

The Flapper is an icon of womanhood and style that first appeared in the 1920s in the wake of the world-changing events of World War One. Flappers were young girls (or young-in-spirit) who rebelled against the strict moral and fashion codes of the older generation. They were free-spirits, into dancing, jazz music, and illegal substances like alcohol --outlawed in the Prohibition-era 1920s, also the time-period of bootlegger gangsters and speakeasies.

Pioneered by designers like Coco Chanel, the Flapper "uniform" was new because it got rid of corsets and other older forms of female undergarments and was thus a liberating change.

Flapper icons include Jazz Age heroines like Josephine Baker, Zelda Fitzgerald, Anita Loos, Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, and Helen Kane. Think Betty Boop, Olive Oyl, and the cartoons of John Held Jr in the New Yorker.

Flapper-style dresses often have dropped waists and are sleeveless. Open backs and and scooped necklines were common. A simple cocktail dress with a straight or slight A-line will also do as a Flapper fill-in. Look for beads, fringes, and tassles. Sometimes a mod 60s dress can even double for a 1920s frock.

Stockings and garters are a must. Some flappers wore their stockings rolled down to the knee.

Cloche hats or bell-shaped / bucket hats are also hallmarks of the 1920s, as are headbands and feathered headpieces.

Gloves, longer skirts (knee-length or slightly longer) matched with sleeveless tops or matching suits, long pearl necklaces, cocktail rings, cigarettes and cigarette holders, flasks, and Deco purses and clutches are also perfect accessories.

Royal City Roller Girls Season Finale!

Meow! has been very proud to be a sponsor of the Guelph Roller Derby league this year. It has been such a joy seeing the response from fans in Guelph and the growth in the teams in terms of skill and experience. We saw some fun bouts, some great action, and some tough but classy dames!

Now the first ever season is winding down and the Season Finale is being held this Saturday, August 6 at The Sleeman Centre downtown. As usual, tickets are available at Meow! for only $8. Why not come out to see which of your favourite teams --Violet Uprising, Killer Queens, or Our Ladies of Pain-- comes out on top?

"Ooh What You Do" was the flipside to "Randy", released in 1958 by 15-year-old Vanda King from Scarborough. Vanda went on to a long career as a lounge singer and tv star on CBC's Nightcap and CTV's Diamond Lil's. Today she is a millionaire and owner of Vanda King's Piano Showcase. Very inspirational!

Dancers will commemorate International Women’s Day in Guelph

GUELPH — The 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day is something to dance about, and the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival and Dance Theatre David Earle are joining forces to celebrate the milestone.

The program, called Women’s Voices, will be performed March 8, at 7 p.m., at the E.L. Fox Auditorium, at John F. Ross high school.

“Women are usually the people behind dance,” said Janet Johnson, a founder of the dance festival who choreographed The Illumination of Willow, part of the women’s day program. “It seems natural for dancers to celebrate the cause as well. Dance can be a potent piece of communication.”

Last Friday night, Temple Studios opened its doors to the public, those who attended got to watch the dancers in an open rehearsal. Observers saw snippets of what’s to come next week.

Johnson said her piece was inspired by her mother, who was primarily seated at the end of her life.

“It’s an unveiling of ourselves,” Johnson explained before the dancers started. “There are so many women who can’t tell their stories. This is a mantra to them.”

Suzette Sherman choreographed the piece Thoughts on Leaving, which explores the notions of coming and going and saying goodbye. She dances a solo part in it, which was gorgeous.

“People need to see that,” was David Earle’s comment when she finished. “That’s my only note. I have no criticism.”

Julia Garlisi choreographed the final piece, Weeping Meadow and Dust of Time. The section performed last week was full of contrast and unexpected juxtaposition, like the delicate music contrasting with the strong movements of the dancers, and the notions of being and maintaining individuality in an interconnected and interdependent world.

The dancers have been doing motion and movement workshops with girls and women in the community, and the hope is to add to this component in the future. Understanding and using purposeful movement can help overcome obstacles, to lead to better understanding of the relationships in their lives and indeed, to better understanding of oneself.

Tura Satana, Feminist Icon

July 10, 1938 – February 4, 2011

Tura Satana died last week. She was an actress and dancer best known for her role in Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! one of our favourite movies of all time here at Meow! Strong, beautiful, sexy, funny, cool. She was a real life superwoman in so many ways, just read her biography and see. What a life!
