Snow!

That's right. We saw snow yesterday. Granted, it was only for about 2 minutes, and it was kind of sparse and wet, but it was still snow. (A customer came into the store and told us that she had just driven through hail, sleet, snow, and rain --all within the Guelph city limits!)

While there is no sign of flurries today, we thought we'd just issue this reminder that Meow! has started to stock up on all sorts of winter accessories like mittens, gloves, hats, toques, scarves, boots, jackets, sweaters, and coats. Neat new stuff arrives every day and we are expecting an extra big batch of new stuff to arrive late Friday night so we can have it on the floor for Saturday.

Stay warm! Be cool. Shop Meow! :)

Guelph News: Hanlon Creek Protest

So the big news in Guelph recently is the occupation at Hanlon Creek. The city wants to build a new business park (for factories and stuff) in an area of Guelph that is home to old growth forest and an endangered species of salamander. Some dedicated people have occupied the future construction site to raise awareness of this issue and try to get the city to change its plans. This is a very important cause that touches so many issues, including quality of life, our environment, business, and city government.

The city has gone to the police and to the courts to gets the protesters out. There is a long fight ahead and and it may be costly. It will also require people turning out to gatherings at City Hall and writing letters to the mayor and city council members. Here are some resources:

The Occupiers' blog
Adam Donaldson of Echo Weekly's Guelph blog
Daily Mercury Blog

email

The occupiers and their support network need food and other support. They will alos need legal money. Supporters are selling pins and bracelets made from dead vegetable life found at the site. We have some at Meow! but they are also available elsewhere.

Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day from Meow!

Once upon a time, the virginal Miss Canada was the symbol for our fair country. Here we see her, in a Confederation-era cartoon, being wooed by Uncle Sam while England's John Bull is caught napping. It was fear of the U.S. that in part led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada. Isn't Miss Canada exquisite? The height of fashion! I'd kill for that dress or hat!

Since Meow will be closed July 1, here's hoping you have a safe and happy holiday!

We will reopen July 2.

Father's Day at Meow!

You wouldn't think Meow! --being a women's clothing store-- would have much in the way of gifts for Father's Day, and you'd generally be right. But one thing we do have is cufflinks. Cufflinks are the perfect gift for dad, even if he doesn't have any shirts with French cuffs. Cufflinks say, "you're a classy guy who deserves this symbol of masculinity" like almost no other gift. Meow! always has an assortment of cufflinks (and even the occasional matching tie pin or clip!) so take a look in one of our jewelry cases for that special fella in your life. Prices range from $10 to $20.

Other gift ideas: classic LPs with Frank Sinatra, Rolling Stones, etc, hats, ties.

Village People Records in Guelph

We still have a few Village People LPs left at MEOW!

The big show is tonite!

The Original Village People Bring Disco Fever to River Run Centre

Guelph, ON, April 15, 2009 – River Run Centre is pleased to present the original Village People for one night only on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 8 p.m. The defining men of disco will combine their world famous hits with energetic choreography and outrageous fun, delivering a night of great entertainment not to be missed.

This electrifying show will feature the group's disco era anthems including Macho Man, Go West, San Francisco/In Hollywood, In the Navy, and their signature hit YMCA, as well as new material such as Trash Disco - a blend of over 70 dance favourites in one special performance number. Village People's enduring songs and one-of-a-kind performances bring smiles to audiences all over the world. Fans can't help themselves from singing and dancing along.

"They helped define a Pop era and they are back!" – Billboard

"Exuberant – a wildly entertaining performance!" – NY Daily News

Village People have sold over 85 million albums and singles and are still going strong after 30+ years. They have been honoured with multiple awards over the course of their career and recently received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. The six talented members of the group are: Filipe Rose, Alex Briley and David Hodo (all original to the band), Ray Simpson (since 1979), Jeff Olson (since 1980), and Eric Anzalone (since 1995). These men bring to life the group's often-imitated signature characters of the Native American, Soldier, Construction Worker, Cop, Cowboy and Biker, with the campy enthusiasm that have made Village People famous.

Village People are touring internationally, with stops in Canada, England, France, Peru, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Germany. Their visit to Guelph is part of River Run Centre's 2008-2009 Blackmont Capital Music Series.

Tickets for Village People are on sale now through the River Run Centre box office. Adult ticket prices range from $47 - $57 with discounts available for students and seniors. RIP Lux Interior

The lead singer of one of MEOW!'s fave bands, The Cramps, has just passed away. The Cramps combined everything that's important in life: sexiness, style, old records, rock n' roll, and a lust for life. A sad day. Our hearts go out to his lady love, Poison Ivy Rorschach.

Here they are from back in the day, performing live at a mental hospital:

New Neighbours!

Meow! has new neighbours. We'd like to welcome The Guelph Civic League to the neighbourhood.

The Civic League is a non-profit organization devoted to better city planning, support of local businesses, heritage conservation, and ecology. They have new office space right above Meow!, in the upstairs part of our building where Beadazzled used to be. The office space is officially called "10 Carden" (our shared address) and is available for rental or use as meeting space for local groups. It's billed as "A Space for Change."

Just like Meow!, it is a beautiful heritage space, right across from City Hall and with lots of potential for our community. Check out the links above for a sneak peak and loads of background info. Photos here.
